The statement, "I said it was impossible, but I still remember it," conjures a humorous memory of my life (215). Calliope is referring to remembering the events and feelings of her birth, which is often impossible to recollect due to an underdevelopped brain. My brother claims that he remembers his birth and his first few breaths. He says that he remembers coming out yelling like a baboon and wanting attention from everyone. Though I don't think it's truly possible to remember that moment, his account seems accurate with who he is today.
There is a great shift in this section of the novel as Cal's narration changes a bit. He states, "From here on in, everything I'll tell you is colored by the subjective experience of being part of events. Here's where my story splits, divides, undergoes meiosis" (217). Here, the narrator is speaking directly to the reader. It is almost as if Eugenides's own voice momentarily shines through the narration.
